Condition: Two original reprints from the late 1800s, in paper with no covers. 1875 publication has 4 illustrations noted at end, but they are missing. 1873 publication has 3 illustrations in good shape. Stamps from Lick Observatory on front page. Otherwise clean and unmarked. Overall VG condition with noted illustrations missing Information: Very scarce reprints of reports on the 1874 transit of venus observed in New South Wales, one of many national expeditions to help astronomers measure the distance to the sun. The next transit occurred in 1882, and then not again until 2004 and 2012. Russell was instrumental in organizing the Australian effort, and after many delays, published a full bound report, with lovely illustrations and an impressive art nouveau cover, over a decade later. Biographical Note: Henry Chamberlain Russell CMG FRS (1836 – 1907) was an Australian astronomer and meteorologist.Russell joined the staff of the Sydney Observatory under William Scott who resigned in 1862. Russell then became acting director until 1864 until the new government astronomer, George Smalley, was appointed. On the death of Smalley on 11 July 1870 Russell became government astronomer a salary of £555 and held the position for 35 years. Russell immediately began reorganising and refurnishing the building, which he succeeded in getting considerably enlarged during the next seven years. With Robert L. J. Ellery, Russell organised an expedition to observe a total eclipse of the sun to Cape Sidmouth in 1871. Russell prepared for the observation of the transit of Venus in 1874 for which four observing stations were equipped. Russell arranged for a band of competent observers to staff them, and the results were generally very successful; an interesting account of them was published by Russell in 1892, Observations of the Transit of Venus.
