EXTREMELY UNUSUAL: Vintage micromount of a little known occurrence, mounted and once owned by the late Neal Yedlin, who is still generally regarded as the greatest micromounter of all time. Per Mindat, “Coccolite” is a synonym for diopside, which typically is a pyroxene as determined by morphology and cleavage. Yedlin mounted the dozens of crystals atop a rounded black pedestal in a two part cardboard micromount display case such as used by the legendary late micromounters in the first half of the 20th century. Mr. Yedlin handwrote the identification on his personal printed label. His collection is now owned by the Smithsonian and presumably traded or sold this piece prior to his passing in 1977.PLEASE READ IF NOT FAMILIAR WITH MICROMOUNTS!! This specimen and all micromounts, require significant magnification to be appreciated and sometimes are too small to be seen with the naked eye. The pertinent species, certainly when on matrix, often comprises but a small portion of the overall specimen. The micromounts offered for sale at this site have been photographed at between 10x and 50x and except where otherwise noted come mounted in lidded plastic boxes of various ages ranging in size from a little less to a little more than one cubic inch. We ship up to 6 micromounts in a 4 inch x 4 inch x 4 inch box. Usually, our micromounts come from old collections. Identifications typically speak for themselves pursuant to labels that are usually original and affixed to the case bearing the specimen when we acquired it.Whenever these identifications are not immediately obvious, we research as much as possible relying on MINDAT and other sources, and we will not sell specimens we are not convinced have been labeled accurately according to both species and locality. Usually, the specimens are mounted with glue to a pedestal that’s often fabricated from cork, wood, or plastic, which in turn has been glued to the bottom of the display case. Some specimens, however, are more simply mounted to the bottom of their cases with a plastic-based putty known as “Mineral Tack.” Before we list and before shipping, we check to ascertain that each specimen is firmly mounted. When appropriate, we’ll enclose a bit of toilet paper, batting or or very thin plastic wrap material inside the micromount case to help assure that the specimen remains firmly mounted during shipping. Even so, it’s not impossible for a micromount to become dislodged during shipping. Occasionally this damages the specimen, but usually not. Should a specimen arrive damaged, we issue an immediate refund. Should a micromount specimen selling for more than $10.00 US arrive damaged we request that it be returned and will refund your payment and reimburse your shipping costs to return it.
