EXCAVATED CONFEDERATE EAGLE STAFF BUTTON, BATTLE OF SAILORS CREEK, APRIL 6, 1865 This excavated Confederate staff uniform button was found in Little Sailor’s Creek where it meets the Deatonville Road on the old Sailor’s Creek Virginia battlefield back before this area became N.P.S. Property! It is 5/8” diameter with a flat face & has an American eagle facing to it’s right with a raised rim around the outside. It is in only fair condition as it was in the creek for over 100 years but you can still see (faintly) the eagle with the head facing to it’s right. There is a small crack on the front top at the eagle’s head & the back still has the shank with a lot of creek bottom encrustation attached so no back mark can be seen. I have tried several dozen times to get a good picture that shows the eagle but none have turned out very well! I have attached the best of them but they do not show the eagle very well because it is so faint. It is there & can be seen with a good magnifying glass & good light! It was bought by the famous Virginia artifacts collector James Anderson & wa This button comes with a certificate of authenticity! Historical note During the battle Union General Wright’s Corps formed opposite Confederate Ewell and used twenty artillery pieces to shell the Southern force. After a thirty-minute cannonade, one of Wright’s divisions waded into the swollen waters of Little Sailor’s Creek. Ewell’s defenders let loose a volley that staggered a portion of the attacking force, which bolted for cover. Confederate General Stapleton Crutchfield seized this opportunity and led an impetuous counterattack spearheaded by his heavy artillery battalions. These artillerymen acting as infantry became embroiled in savage hand-to-hand combat that claimed Crutchfield’s life. By now, more Federals had crossed the stream and were advancing on Ewell’s left. After another brutal melee, the Confederates began to surrender.
