eBay Wilder Austin Pickard (1857-1939) started the company in 1894 by offering his customers hand-painted gift-ware, art-ware, and eventually dinnerware of the highest quality. From 1895 to 1930 the company was located in Chicago and it is easy to see why. Artists from the famed Art Institute of Chicago and all over Europe came to Chicago to create this uniquely American style one of a kind hand-painted pieces. This art form quickly grew in popularity and resulted in a company that became one of the preeminent American companies to provide high quality china. Its variety of exquisite patterns, elegant gold and platinum borders, and artistic rendering of flowers, fruits, figurals and scenics. This gorgeous bulbous pitcher was one of their products. The painting is done by a skilled artisan and signed by the artist, Gasper. The grapes (or currents) are the subject the artist has chosen and the subtle shading of the leaves and fruit on the vine against the background of burnt orange is simply stunning. The very heavy gold rim and thick gold handle further enhance the piece. The interior of the pitcher is coated with a unique pearlized finish glaze. The yellow Pickard label is stamped on the bottom of the pitcher but it is very hand to read and next to impossible to photograph. It appears to be the label used by Pickard in around 1902-1905. The pitcher is 6″ high x 5″ wide. It is in perfect condition with no cracks, crazing, or damage of any kind. A beautiful piece for any avid Pickard collector or anyone who appreciates quality American made vintage object of art.
