This listing is for a set of four lovely Bing & Grondahl Christmas plates. Included in this set of four plates you’ll receive 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977. Each plate measures 7 1/4-inches in diameter and is in excellent condition. The Bing & Grondahl plate collection description says in part: The origin of the Christmas Plate: It was an ancient Danish tradition that inspired the world’s first porcelain Christmas Plate. For centuries at Christmastime, the wealthy had given their servants gifts of candy, cake, and food on plates made of metal or wood. As the plates became more and more decorative, they were displayed and cherished. Then in 1895, Harald Bing decided to make a special Christmas Plate in the renowned Bing & Grondahl porcelain factory in Copenhagen. It was a limited edition, dated and handpainted with a scene of the skyline of Copenhagen as seen through a frosted windowpane. At first, in the traditional way, it was meant to be presented as a gift filled with fruits and candies. But it quickly became valued for itself alone and each year as the Bing & Grondahl Christmas Plates were issued, they soon became collectors’ favorites. Fortunate collectors who discovered Bing & Grondahl Christmas Plates years ago know well that eager yearning to add one more plate – whether an older one, or next year’s – to their treasured display.
