Seabees and Superforts at War Don Farrell’s new book, Seabees and Superforts at War: Tinian’s Critical Role in the Ultimate Defeat of Japan is a valuable companion to his last publication, Tinian and The Bomb: Project Alberta and Operation Centerboard Most World War II histories focus on the life and times of a great war hero, or national leadership, strategic objectives accomplished, missions failed. Don Farrell’s new book, Seabees and Superforts at War: Tinian’s Critical Role in the Ultimate Defeat of Japan, focuses on the role played by one, very small island in the Western Pacific that helped win the war. And, it is not pure military history. Instead of opening with the childhood experiences of a future admiral or general, Farrell starts the story with a description of the indigenous Chamorro and imported Japanese community that built Tinian into a major sugar supplier for Imperial Japan, living the good life, raising children near the beach, on a tropical island, when their lives were suddenly and totally destroyed by the US Navy. Thousands of Okinawan-Japanese, Korean-Japanese and Japanese citizens from the Home Islands died — killed during the battle or by suicide at its end. Out of the 18,000 that lived on Tinian before the battle, some 11,500 survived to live out the war in a refugee camp.
