Fiesty and independent, the South Pacific Coast seized a piece of the monopoly’s home ground and held on. By spending eight million dollars on its construction, two Comstock millionaires created the shortest, fastest route between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. For the first time, the 80-mile rail expanse between the two cities-punctuated with tidal bogs and steep mountains-could be traveled in a little under four hours. It was a revolution in speed. Pounding down the bay at the blinding speed of 45 mph, the narrow gauge trains made the city of Santa Cruz a day trip from the City, and, for the first time, the tourists and timber of the Santa Cruz coast were no longer the captives of the mighty Southern Pacific. Suddenly the South Pacific Coast put dozens of obscure California places on the map: Wrights, Glenwood, Agnew, Newark, Drawbridge, College Park, Boulder Creek. They were places where freight rates were driven down because competition was lively, and they were places that would measure the growth of northern California’s expansion towards urbanization. All but obliterated by the concrete urban sprawl that has followed, the South Pacific Coast and the places it connected have become a part of the California Myth, and are visited once again by Bruce MacGregor and Richard Truesdale in South Pacific Coast-A Centennial.
