Soviet Russian USSR Order of the Badge of Honor with serial number in the 40-45 thousand range, an early “flatback” variation, awarded by Decree of the Supreme Soviet in January 1944 to Major (later Lt. Colonel) of Military Justice Nikolai Artamonov. A very rare WWII military awarding of a Badge of Honor (a traditionally labor award) to a Military Justice officer!The Order of the Badge of Honor is on a suspension together with a Combat Service Medal, serial number 3090962, “u-shaped eyelet” variation – which is also included in the lot. Per archival research, this Combat Service did not belong to Artamonov. However, he was awarded a Combat Service Medal (with serial number in the 1 million range). The bar is thus an approximation of what his awards looked like as of 1945. The citation (considered “sensitive” by the archives and therefore only available in excerpted form) for Artamonov’s Badge of Honor praises his work in improving his unit’s combat readiness by taking proactive measures to reduce crime. He reduced crime by a factor of 4! As a result of his excellent work, he was promoted to Deputy Military Procurator of the 1st Red Banner Army. Artamonov presumably served in that same role during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria. Artamonov later served as Military Procurator for a department of the Main Military Procuratorate and was awarded an Order of the Red Star and Order of the Red Banner for long service. Condition is as seen in the images! Badge of Honor – enamel damage to the star, missing two letters, and missing a rivet on the reverse. Combat Merit Medal – minor enamel loss (very commonly encountered). The serial number of the award matches the serial number shown in the archival documents, obviously.
