When upgrading these suspensions to such setups as a parallel multi-link with coilovers for additional control of your rear axle’s placement and the minimization of pinion angle change under acceleration, you will find that these systems do not have a way to control lateral axle movement when cornering. That is where a Watts link suspension becomes essential. While many OEMs have used a Panhard bar to control lateral axle movement, very few have used a Watts link suspension in their production cars. This mainly comes down to packaging and cost. Panhard bars are very simple to manufacture and are much easier to package under the rear of a rear wheel drive vehicle and still allow exhaust routing over the axle and to the rear of the car. The Watts link suspension, on the other hand, takes up more packaging space and usually requires more room between the rear axle and the body of the car. If you have the room to fit a Watts link kit you will have better lateral control of your rear axle than if you used a Panhard bar, as a Panhard bar’s design inherently creates an arc as the rear suspension moves (allowing small amounts of axle shift left and right), whereas a Watts link’s center link moves in a gentle “S” shaped motion vertically, with no lateral axle movement. This allows you to run larger tires or lower ride height without fear of damaging your tires or quarter panel. If you have the installation room and need to have precise control of your axle’s lateral movement, the Watts link is preferred over a Panhard bar setup. Heavy Duty Steel Construction Compliments Your Aftermarket Rear Suspension Starting with a 19-inch long and 3/4-inch diameter DOM steel tube with .180-inch wall thickness for our links, we thread the steel tube 2-inches per side for a pair of 1/2-20 rod ends with left hand and right hand threads. This allows link bar adjustment right on the vehicle with only having to loosen the jam nuts for adjustment. The included weld-on frame tabs are made from 5/16-inch thick steel plate, while the axle pivot bracket uses slightly thicker 3/8-inch steel. The actual pivot link is made from 1/4-inch thick steel. We include attaching hardware for the Watts links rod ends to the frame tabs and Watts link pivot.
