Forged cavity backed iron with two piece head design and steel shafts. Callaway’s brand new forging uses a two piece head design with the face welded to the main body and rear cavity section. “Extreme Notch Weighting” should boost forgiveness and stability whilst helping to lower the center of gravity and make long irons more playable. When we picked up the Callaway X-Tour irons you could see immediately from the back that it was a Callaway, with the notch design and undercut cavity.However when you put it down at address it looked like any other premium iron with a compact head, thin top line and no cavity in view. Amazing (for a Callaway).It had a very classic offset and lie and the feel from the forged head was very solid, if a little heavy due to the cavity system that keeps the weight low and behind the face.We tested it with a True Temper Dynamic Gold stiff steel shaft and the club felt heavier than competitors. Overall we think low handicappers should go for this over the X-18 Pro Series and if the price is right, then it could open up a new market for Callaway. These irons are fantastic. I have the Rifle 6.0 stiff shafts. Although I am an older golfer, I was worried that the stiff shafts would be a problem. However, I find that I have not lost distance over a regular flex. I can still get over 100 yards with the PW. The accuracy and feel is fantastic. Much better than any club I’ve played. With chunky “game improvement” irons, I would slice and hook shots. My forged iron shots are straight as an arrow most of the time. Even flubbed or fat shots are going straight.
