***********The FHF 909 automatic movement gains about 5 minutes by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. While the date wheel rolls over without issue when using the quickset function it doesn’t tend to align properly when automatically or manually rolled over. Given these issues and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended.*********** This seldom seen vintage 1970’s Elgin, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a near pristine matte black “T SWISS MADE T” signed dial and the original lume, which remains fully intact and emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged gracefully. The Explorer-style silver bezel, which shows wear and rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension, presents nicely. The all stainless steel case shows moderate wear with signs of oxidation, most notably on the non-crown side. The outer edge of the case back is stamped “ELGIN ALL STAINLESS STEEL SWISS.” The inside of the case back is stamped “ELGIN SWITZERLAND” followed by “M 280 Y” and “909-5004.” The crystal should be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss “ELGIN” stamped FHF 909 automatic movement with quickset day and date functions runs strong, albeit fast, and both the day and date wheels roll over at 12 am. While the date wheel rolls over without issue when using the quickset function it doesn’t tend to align properly when automatically or manually rolled over. The quickset date function works flawlessly by pulling the crown out to the second (final/last) position and then turning the crown clockwise until the desired date has been reached. When this is done the day wheel is held static and the date wheel numbers decrease (go in descending order). The quickset day function works in precisely the same manner with the exception of having to turn the crown counterclockwise. When this is done the day wheel advances through the days of the week and the date wheel numbers increase (go in ascending order). After winding the signed, non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement gained about 5 minutes by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. The crown winds smoothly. Given the issues mentioned and considering the movement’s unknown service history a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 39 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11 mm. A complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch.
